Orlando without a hire car: what worked for our family

We spent our August 2026 Orlando holiday without renting a car. Rideshares made it possible, but they weren’t instant or cheap for every journey. Here’s what we learned from doing it as a family of three.

Choose your hotel around the transport you’ll use

Our main base was the Courtyard Lake Buena Vista for 10 nights. We walked to some nearby food and shops, and checked the hotel’s advertised Disney shuttle timetable. That service did not cover to Universal or SeaWorld, so we used Uber for those journeys.

A hotel shuttle is useful only if its destinations and times match your plans. Before booking, check the current route, timetable, reservation rules and whether it serves the parks you intend to visit.

Budget for rides in both directions

Our first Uber from Orlando International Airport to the hotel was about $43. For Clearwater Beach, the ride was about $129 one way and took around two hours. That day made clear why it’s important to estimate the return journey too, especially for destinations outside the main tourist areas.

Surge pricing, traffic, pickup points and demand can change the cost. Treat our fares as what we paid on those dates, not a price promise. Compare rideshare with a tour, shuttle or car hire for any long day trip.

Allow time after parks and evening shows

After a busy park evening, we waited around 45 minutes on one occasion for a rideshare and had a pickup cancelled. Crowds leaving together can make the end of the day slower. Check the live wait and pickup location, keep a buffer after the show, and agree a safe backup plan with your group.

If transport certainty matters more than flexibility, see whether a hotel shuttle or pre-booked transfer fits your route and timetable.

When going car-free may suit you

It suited us because we stayed in a tourist area, used hotel transport for some journeys and accepted that longer trips needed planning. A car may be more practical if your accommodation is farther out, you’re visiting several spread-out places, or you want to make spontaneous stops. Compare the full car cost, including rental, insurance, fuel, tolls and parking, with the transport you would otherwise use.
